Kamerad in the Air by William C. Boswell
An aerial battle on the Western front with a German squadron seen in retreat with the last one (bottom right) being pursued by a British antagonist on her tail. Having possibly run out of ammunition the German gunner puts up his arms in surrender after which point the British planes permitted him to make a safe landing near the British lines as a prison-of-war. The Tatler comments that, the incident may account for some of the undamaged Boche planes which are to be seen at some of our aerodromes. Date: 1918

EDITORS COMMENTS
Kamerad in the Air" is a captivating aerial battle scene captured by American photographer William C. Boswell during the final year of World War I. The photograph, dated 1918, depicts a thrilling moment on the Western Front as a German squadron is seen in retreat. The last German plane, bottom right, is being relentlessly pursued by a British antagonist, with the German gunner, seemingly having exhausted his ammunition, raising his arms in surrender. The incident, as reported by The Tatler, is believed to account for some of the undamaged German planes that were later seen at British aerodromes. The Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and Royal Air Force (RAF) were known for their strategic prowess in the skies, and this photograph is a testament to their unwavering determination and skill. The image vividly portrays the intensity and danger of aerial combat during the First World War. The contrasting colors and dynamic angles create a sense of motion and energy, transporting us back to the heart of the conflict. This photograph is a significant historical record of the air war on the Western Front and the complexities of warfare during this period. It is a poignant reminder of the courage and resilience of the pilots involved, as well as the fragility of life in the face of adversity. William C.
