He went on to further his education at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Berlin. In 1836, he was appointed to the chair of Greek at the University of Edinburgh, a position he held for over 50 years. His translations of the works of Plato and Aristotle, as well as his commentaries on Homer, were groundbreaking in their time and remain influential today. Despite his scholarly pursuits, Blackie was also deeply engaged with the literary and cultural life of his time. He was a founding member of the Edinburgh Philosophical Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and he played a key role in the establishment of the Edinburgh International Festival.
