1799 Campbell Judge Stonefield

EDITORS COMMENTS
John Campbell, Lord Stonefield (circa 1799): A Portrait of a Distinguished Scottish Judge John Campbell, 1st Baron Stonefield (1752-1831), was a prominent Scottish judge and statesman, who served as Lord Advocate of Scotland from 1796 to 1806 and as a Lord Commissioner of the Treasury in London from 1807 to 1812. This striking portrait, believed to have been taken around 1799, captures the intensity and wisdom of Lord Stonefield as he gazes directly at the viewer. Born in Argyllshire, Scotland, John Campbell was educated at the University of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh. He began his legal career as an advocate in Edinburgh before being appointed a Lord of Session in 1788. In 1796, he was elevated to the position of Lord Advocate, making him the chief legal advisor to the Scottish Government. During his tenure, he played a key role in the suppression of the anti-Catholic Gordon Riots in Edinburgh. Lord Stonefield's legal expertise extended beyond Scotland, and he was called to the English Bar in 1801. In 1807, he was appointed as a Lord Commissioner of the Treasury in London, where he served until 1812. He was later created a Baronet in 1814 and a Baron in 1816. This portrait, with its richly textured fabric and intricate detail, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the late 18th century and the world of Scottish jurisprudence. The image of Lord Stonefield, with his stern expression and formal attire, speaks to the gravity and importance of the law during this period. As we gaze upon this portrait, we are reminded of the enduring legacy of Scotland's legal history and the influential figures who shaped it.
