1847 Belge Desire Flore Frontispiece Tinted Hannon Lecluse Volume

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Charles de l'Écluse, also known as Carolus Clusius (1526-1609), a renowned Flemish botanist, physician, and professor of botany at the University of Leuven. The illustration is taken from Joseph-Desire Hannon's comprehensive work, "Flore Belge, Phanerogamie," published in 1847. This frontispiece, beautifully tinted, serves as an introduction to the first volume of the series, which focuses on Belgian flowering plants. Charles de l'Écluse was a pivotal figure in European botany, making significant contributions to the fields of botanical nomenclature, taxonomy, and horticulture. He is credited with the discovery and description of numerous plant species, including the potato, which he introduced to Europe from South America. His work laid the foundation for modern botanical research and helped establish the Jardin des Plantes in Brussels, the oldest botanical garden in Belgium. The intricately detailed portrait captures the intellectual intensity and curiosity of this brilliant botanist. The tinted frontispiece, a common practice during the 19th century, adds an artistic touch to the scientific work, enhancing the overall visual appeal of the publication. This portrait not only serves as a testament to the life and achievements of Charles de l'Écluse but also offers a glimpse into the rich history of botanical exploration and discovery.
