1722 1779 Glynn Recorder Serjeant

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished visage of John Glynn (1722-1779), a prominent figure in 18th-century English law and politics. Glynn's impressive legal career began when he was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1745. He quickly rose through the ranks and was appointed Serjeant-at-Law in 1762, a position that placed him among the highest echelons of the legal profession. In addition to his legal accomplishments, Glynn also held the esteemed position of Recorder of London from 1768 until his death in 1779. As Recorder, he was responsible for upholding the laws and customs of the ancient City of London, making him a key figure in the governance of one of the most important commercial and cultural centers of the British Empire. Glynn's impressive legal mind and dedication to his profession earned him the respect and admiration of his peers and the public. He was known for his eloquence in the courtroom and his ability to deliver persuasive arguments that often swayed juries and judges. This portrait, created in 1779, captures Glynn in the prime of his career and reflects the dignity and authority that he brought to his roles as a Serjeant-at-Law and Recorder of London. The artist has skillfully depicted Glynn's piercing gaze and the furrowed brow that suggests the deep concentration and focus required of a great legal mind. The richly textured fabric of his robe and the intricate detail of the wig add to the sense of grandeur and importance that surrounds this historic figure.
