EDITORS COMMENTS
Joan of Navarre, also known as Jeanne de Navarre or Jeanne de Penthiève, was a remarkable woman who played a significant role in the political landscape of Europe during the late Middle Ages. Born around 1370 in Navarre, France, she was the daughter of Jean III, Count of Evreux, and Philippa of Lancaster, a sister of England's King Henry IV. In her first marriage, she bore a son, John V, who later became Duke of Brittany. During her husband's absence, Joan served as regent of Brittany on her son's behalf. Her effective rule earned her the respect and admiration of her subjects. However, her reputation took a hit when her second husband, Oliver de Coetivy, was accused of treason against the English crown. Joan was briefly imprisoned, but she managed to secure her release and her son's inheritance. In 1403, Joan married King Henry IV of England, becoming Queen Consort. She brought with her the Duchy of Brittany as a dowry, which was a valuable addition to the English crown. During her time as queen, Joan was known for her piety and charitable works. She was often seen wearing a crown veil adorned with fleurs-de-lis, a symbol of the French monarchy, reflecting her complex heritage. Joan of Navarre's life was marked by political intrigue, power, and resilience. Her story is a testament to the strength and intelligence of women in the medieval world. This image captures the regal presence of Joan, wearing a crown and a veil, symbolizing her status as a queen and her connection to the French and English monarchies.
