EDITORS COMMENTS
Jefferson Randolph 'Soapy' Smith II: The Notorious American Con Artist and Gangster This photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Jefferson Randolph 'Soapy' Smith II, an American con artist and gangster who rose to infamy during the late 19th century. Born in 1860, Smith gained his nickname from his ability to 'soap' the ground around gambling tables, making the dice roll in his favor. He began his criminal career in St. Louis, Missouri, but his nefarious activities eventually led him to the Klondike Gold Rush in Skagway, Alaska, in 1897. In Skagway, Smith established a saloon and gambling hall, where he used strong-arm tactics and deceit to swindle unsuspecting miners out of their hard-earned gold. His criminal empire expanded, and he soon controlled much of the town's illicit activities. However, his reign of terror came to an end on 8 July 1898, when he was involved in a violent gunfight with law enforcement officers. The photograph, taken around this time, captures Smith's charismatic yet menacing presence. Despite his criminal activities, Smith remains a fascinating figure in American history. His story is a reminder of the lawless frontier days and the complex characters that populated them. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the life of a man who defied the rules and left an indelible mark on history.
