During the Crimean War, he commanded the steam frigate "La Gloire" and participated in several successful engagements against the Russian fleet. In 1856, he was appointed as the commander of the Mediterranean Squadron, where he maintained peace and order in the region. However, Jurien de la Gravière's most notable achievement came during the Franco-Prussian War, when he successfully defended the port of Toulon against the German invasion in 1870. Despite being vastly outnumbered, he managed to hold off the enemy forces for several weeks, allowing the French government to evacuate the city and its inhabitants.
