EDITORS COMMENTS
Jan Pieterszoon Coen (1587-1629), also known as Johan Pieterszoon Coen or simply Coen, was a Dutch merchant and pioneer who played a pivotal role in the Dutch East India Company's (VOC) establishment and expansion in the East Indies. Coen is best known for founding the city of Batavia, which would later become the capital of Dutch Indonesia. Born in the Netherlands, Coen initially pursued a career in the Dutch military before turning to the East Indies trade. He first arrived in the East Indies in 1602 and quickly rose through the ranks of the VOC, becoming the governor-general in 1618. During his tenure, he implemented a series of aggressive policies aimed at securing the Dutch presence in the region and expanding their trade networks. One of Coen's most significant achievements was the founding of Batavia in 1619. The city was established on the island of Java, and its strategic location provided the Dutch with a stronghold from which they could control the lucrative spice trade. Coen oversaw the construction of Fort Nassau, which protected the city from foreign threats, and established a council to govern the settlement. Coen's rule was not without controversy, however. He was accused of using brutal tactics to maintain control, including the infamous "Batavia Massacre" of 1628, in which he ordered the execution of several mutineers and their supporters. This event, along with other incidents, led to Coen's eventual recall to the Netherlands. Despite the controversies surrounding his rule, Coen's legacy in the East Indies was significant. He established the Dutch presence in the region and laid the foundation for the Dutch colonial empire. This print captures the image of a man who was instrumental in shaping the history of the Dutch East Indies and leaving a lasting impact on the world.
