He was a pioneer in using eye-catching headlines, illustrations, and bold fonts to attract readers. Bennett's newspaper was also the first to use telegraphs to transmit news from around the world, making it a leading source of international news. Bennett's tenure as a publisher was marked by several controversies. He was known for his fiery editorials and his willingness to publish scandalous stories, such as the infamous "Petticoat Affair" in 1836, which exposed the adultery of a prominent New York politician.
