EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured lantern slide presents a captivating view of Piazza del Plebiscito, one of the largest and most historic squares in Naples, Italy. The slide, part of the Boswell Collection, dates back to the late 1890s, offering a glimpse into the past. The square is named after the plebiscite that took place here in 1860, when the people of Naples voted to unify with the Kingdom of Sardinia and eventually join the newly formed Kingdom of Italy. The grand architecture of the Royal Palace of Naples, located on the left side of the square, reflects the rich history and opulence of the Bourbon monarchy that ruled Naples until the unification. The palace, with its intricate columns and ornate balconies, stands as a testament to the grandeur of the past. On the right side of the square, the Church of San Francesco di Paolo, with its distinctive dome, adds to the architectural beauty of the scene. The church, founded in the 15th century, is the national church of the Third Order of St. Francis of Assisi and is home to the remains of St. Francis of Paola. The vibrant colours of the slide bring the historic square to life, transporting us back in time to the late 1800s. The use of coloured lantern slides was a popular method for projecting images during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and this slide offers a unique perspective on the history and culture of Naples during that era.
