EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured lantern slide depicts the Triumphal Arch at Porta San Gallo in Florence, Italy. Erected in 1738, the arch was built to celebrate the arrival of the Loreno dynasty in the city. The arch, which is identical to the one that stands today, is a significant historical landmark in Florence's rich history. The Loreno dynasty, also known as the House of Medici, ruled Florence from the late 15th to the mid-18th century. After their expulsion in 1737, the city was under the control of the Habsburg monarchy until the Loreno family regained power in 1737. To mark the occasion, the Triumphal Arch at Porta San Gallo was erected. The arch is adorned with intricate sculptures and decorations, reflecting the grandeur and opulence of the Loreno dynasty. The archway is topped with a statue of the goddess Fortuna, symbolizing the prosperity and good fortune that the Loreno family brought to Florence. This coloured lantern slide, part of the Boswell Collection, offers a vibrant and detailed view of the Triumphal Arch at Porta San Gallo. The late 19th century image transports us back in time, allowing us to appreciate the historical significance and beauty of this architectural masterpiece. The slide, with the slide number 23, is a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Italy. It is a reminder of the grandeur and splendour of the past, and a reminder of the enduring allure of Florence as a cultural and historical destination.
