Photograph showing the interior of a Dakota airplane loaded with kitbags full of coal, destined for Berlin during the airlift of 1948. This particular airplane carried 10 tons of coal in the bags, which was unloaded at Berlin within 15 minutes. Between April 1948 and May 1949 Stalin, leader of the USSR, imposed a land blockade on supplies from Western Europe to West Berlin. In response the British and American governments organised an enormous airlift to supply food and other essentials to the 2.5 million inhabitants of West Berlin. EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the interior of a Dakota transport airplane filled to capacity with kitbags of coal, during the historic Berlin Airlift of 1948. The Dakota, a vital asset in this unprecedented operation, carried an impressive 10 tons of coal, which was urgently required to keep West Berlin's power plants operational amidst a Soviet-imposed land blockade. Between April 1948 and May 1949, Stalin, the Soviet Union's leader, cut off all land access to West Berlin, aiming to force its 2.5 million inhabitants to surrender to Soviet control. In response, the British and American governments orchestrated an enormous airlift to deliver essential supplies, including food and fuel, to the beleaguered city. This photograph showcases the intensity and urgency of the airlift efforts. The Dakota's interior is a sea of kitbags, each one holding a precious ton of coal. The unloading process was swift, with the cargo being unloaded within just 15 minutes upon arrival at Berlin's Tempelhof Airport. The successful airlift lasted for over a year, with a total of 210,000 flights transporting 2.3 million tons of supplies. In July 1949, Stalin finally conceded defeat and lifted the land blockade, marking the end of this pivotal moment in Cold War history. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the determination and resilience shown by the Western Allies during this critical time, ensuring the survival of West Berlin and the preservation of its democratic values.
