EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, two esteemed Indian Maharajahs, Maharaja Sri Pratap Singh Sahib Bahadur of Idar and Maharaja of Bikaner, Sir Ganga Singh, stand together, offering their unwavering support to the British Empire during the tumultuous period of the First World War. Maharaja Sri Pratap Singh Sahib Bahadur of Idar (1845-1922), a career British Indian Army soldier and the Maharaja of the princely state of Idar, is depicted on the left. He was an heir to the Ahmednagar throne from 1902 to 1911, when he graciously abdicated in favor of his adopted son. A devoted friend to Queen Victoria, he served as an aide-de-camp to King Edward VII and was also a close confidant of the future King George V. On the right, Maharaja Sir Ganga Singh (1880-1943), the Maharaja of Bikaner, is shown. He was a colonel in the 2nd Bengal Lancers and fought valiantly for the British in China, earning a mention in despatches. During the First World War, he was the only non-white member of the Imperial War Cabinet, demonstrating the significant role Indian rulers played in the British war effort. Both Maharajas were not only distinguished military leaders but also accomplished sportsmen. Maharaja Sri Pratap Singh Sahib Bahadur was known for his prowess in polo, racquets, and tennis, while Maharaja Sir Ganga Singh was a skilled big-game shooter. This photograph, taken in 1914, captures a poignant moment in history, illustrating the complex relationship between the British Empire and its Indian allies during the First World War. The two Maharajas, as potentates of their respective princely states, stood steadfastly by the British side, demonstrating their loyalty and commitment to the Empire.
