Melencolia I

Melencolia I. Print shows a winged woman representing melancholy in the sense of an artist's spiritual self-portrait. She is surrounded by many symbolic figures and objects, including a bat carrying the inscription Melencolia I below a rainbow; a large stone, ladder, hourglass, bell, and magic square; carpenter's tools and a sleeping dog; and a small putto with a notbook and ink well. A dangerous brew.
