This engraving depicts Huascar Inca (1491-1532), the Sapa Inca, or supreme ruler, of the Inca Empire from 1527 until his defeat in 1532. Huascar was the eldest son of Huayna Capac, the previous Sapa Inca, and was born in the royal city of Cuzco, in what is now Peru. The Inca Empire was at the height of its power and influence during Huascar's reign, covering a vast territory from modern-day Colombia to Chile. However, his rule was marked by internal strife and conflict, as his half-brother Atahualpa also claimed the throne after their father's death. The two brothers engaged in a bitter power struggle, which weakened the Inca Empire and left it vulnerable to the encroaching Spanish conquistadors. In this portrait, Huascar is depicted in profile, wearing the traditional Inca royal attire, including a long, flowing tunic and a baton of authority. The rich colors of the engraving bring the image to life, capturing the regal and powerful presence of the Sapa Inca.
