EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored stipple engraving, created by Carnonkel from an illustration directed by Jean-Gabriel Pretre for Jussieu's "Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles" published by Levrault in Paris between 1816 and 1830, showcases two iconic animals of the equine family: the Horse (Equus caballus) and the Quagga (Equus quagga quagga). The Quagga, an extinct subspecies of the horse, was native to South Africa and distinguished by its unique striped coat pattern, which resembled that of a zebra. The Horse, a domesticated animal, is depicted in its classic form, with a sleek coat and elegant features that have captivated humans for thousands of years. The Quagga, however, is shown with its distinctive stripes, which served as its primary means of camouflage in the savannas of South Africa. Jean-Gabriel Pretre, a renowned French naturalist and artist, meticulously captured the essence of these animals in this beautiful engraving. The intricate details of their coats, the subtle shading, and the lifelike expressions all contribute to the stunning visual representation of these animals. The Quagga, unfortunately, is no longer with us. The last known Quagga died in captivity in 1883. However, efforts have been made to preserve its memory and legacy through scientific research and conservation initiatives. The Horse, on the other hand, continues to be an integral part of human life, serving as a companion, a source of transportation, and a symbol of power and freedom. This engraving is not only a beautiful work of art but also a testament to the rich natural history of our planet and the importance of documenting and preserving the natural world for future generations.
