Adrian Bethell Clarissa Classes Engaged Engagement Lionel Major Tennant Tennyson Upper

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant and captivating portrait, The Hon. Clarissa Tennant (1896-1960) is depicted at the height of her youth and beauty, as she proudly displays her engagement ring following her betrothal to Adrian Bethell in 1915. Clarissa, the daughter of the 1st Baron Glenconner, was one of the last debutantes to be presented at court before the outbreak of the First World War in the summer of that year. Her engagement marked the beginning of a life filled with love, heartache, and intrigue, as she went on to marry a total of three times. The image captures the essence of the upper classes and the societal norms of the early 20th century. Clarissa's exquisite gown, adorned with intricate beading and lace, reflects the opulence and refinement of the era. Her expressive eyes and radiant smile convey a sense of joy and excitement, as she embarks on the next chapter of her life. The portrait offers a glimpse into a bygone era, a time when tradition and protocol played a significant role in shaping the lives of the wealthy and influential. The backdrop of the impending war adds an air of melancholy and uncertainty, as the world was on the brink of change. Clarissa's story is a fascinating one, filled with twists and turns. She married Adrian Bethell in a lavish ceremony, but the union was short-lived, and they were divorced just three years later. In 1921, she wed Major Lionel Tennyson, and their marriage produced two children. However, tragedy struck when Major Tennyson was killed in a car accident in 1933. In 1937, Clarissa married James Beck, and they remained together until his death in 1956. Barbara Cartland, the famous romance novelist, once described Clarissa as "the most beautiful woman I had ever seen," a testament to her enduring allure and timeless beauty. This portrait serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, and the stories and lives that shaped it.
