Admiralty Arrival Battleship Deck Duke Class Iron Lined Marlborough Mediterranean Review Reviewing Salute Salutes Saluting Senior 1923

EDITORS COMMENTS
HMS Marlborough: Arrival of the First Lord of the Admiralty, 1923 This striking photograph captures the moment of grandeur and ceremony as HMS Marlborough welcomes the First Lord of the Admiralty, Leo Amery, aboard in 1923. The Iron Duke-class battleship, named in honor of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, was built between 1912 and 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard and entered service just prior to the First World War. Assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet following the war, HMS Marlborough played a significant role in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea (1919-1920). The battleship also took part in the Greco-Turkish War. In this image, the senior officers of the ship are lined up on the deck, presenting a smart and disciplined appearance as they salute the arrival of their esteemed guest. The First Lord of the Admiralty, Leo Amery, stands proudly between them, taking in the scene before him. The formal proceedings are underway, and the ship's company is at the ready to carry out their duties. The Iron Duke-class battleship, a symbol of British naval power and prestige, served as a testament to the country's maritime dominance during the 1920s. This photograph offers a glimpse into the grandeur and tradition of the Royal Navy during this era, with its formal ceremonies and impeccably dressed officers.
