EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph offers a glimpse into the Hagenbeck Nubian Exhibit, a prominent feature of Carl Hagenbeck's Tierpark Hagenbeck in Hamburg-Stellingen during the early 20th century. Hagenbeck, a pioneering figure in the world of zoos, is best known for founding Germany's most successful privately-owned zoo, which opened at its present location in 1907. However, his role in displaying human beings alongside animals, a practice referred to as 'human zoos,' is a less celebrated aspect of his legacy. In this exhibit, Ethiopian warriors are displayed alongside Egyptian-Ottoman troops. The Ethiopian warriors, dressed in traditional attire and carrying weapons, are shown standing proudly before a fortified enclosure. The presence of Egyptian-Ottoman soldiers adds an intriguing layer to the exhibit, reflecting the complex historical relationships between Africa and the Middle East. The Hagenbeck Nubian Exhibit was a major attraction in Europe, touring cities such as Paris, London, and Berlin. At the time, the display of human beings alongside animals was a novelty that fascinated European audiences, who were eager to witness the 'exotic' and 'other.' However, this practice is now widely criticized for its exploitative nature and the objectification of the individuals on display. Despite the controversy surrounding human zoos, this photograph remains an important historical document, offering insights into the cultural attitudes and practices of the time. The image of the Ethiopian warriors and Egyptian-Ottoman troops, standing proudly before their enclosure, serves as a reminder of the complex and nuanced relationships between Africa, Europe, and the Middle East in the early 20th century.
