EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the historic site of the Battle of Marathon in Greece, where in 490 BCE a small Greek army, primarily composed of Athenian citizens, defied all odds and decisively defeated a much larger Persian invading force. The battle, which took place just north of the ancient city of Athens, is considered a turning point in ancient Greek history and a symbol of the indomitable spirit of the Greek people. The scene depicted in the print shows the exhausted but triumphant Greek soldiers returning from the battlefield, having successfully repelled the Persian invaders. At the center of the image, a messenger on horseback rides back to Athens with the news of the Greek victory. The messenger's urgent mission was to deliver the good news to the city, which had been under threat of invasion and occupation. The Battle of Marathon is believed to have taken place on the plain of Marathon, near the modern-day town of Marathon. The Greek army, led by the legendary Athenian general Miltiades, numbered around 10,000 men, while the Persian force, under the command of Datis and Artaphernes, is estimated to have had up to 80,000 soldiers. Despite the significant size difference between the two forces, the Greeks were able to outmaneuver and outfight the Persians, inflicting heavy casualties and ultimately securing a decisive victory. This historic event is commemorated each year in the modern-day Marathon race, which takes place in Athens and culminates at the Panathenaic Stadium. The race, which covers a distance of 42.195 kilometers, is considered the world's oldest continuous footrace and is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Battle of Marathon and the indomitable spirit of the Greek people.
