EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "George Keppel, 3rd Earl of Albemarle: A Career Soldier with Liberal Views and Harsh Military Dealings" George Keppel, the 3rd Earl of Albemarle (1724-1772), was a prominent figure in British history during the 18th century. Known for his military career, Albemarle was a complex character, possessing liberal views but exhibiting a harsh demeanor in his military dealings. Born into the noble Keppel family, Albemarle's military career began at a young age. He rose through the ranks, serving in various battles and campaigns, including the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War. His military prowess earned him the respect and admiration of his contemporaries, and he was appointed as the Governor of Jamaica in 1756. Despite his successes on the battlefield, Albemarle was also known for his liberal views. He was a patron of the arts and a supporter of the Whig party, which advocated for religious tolerance and political freedom. He was also a vocal critic of the slave trade and spoke out against its inhumanity. However, Albemarle's liberal views did not extend to his military dealings. He was known for his harsh treatment of his soldiers and his ruthless tactics in battle. He was accused of brutality during the siege of Cartagena in 1741 and was later impeached for embezzlement and other military misconduct. Despite these controversies, Albemarle continued to serve in the military and held various high-ranking positions, including Governor of Gibraltar and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He died in 1772, leaving behind a complex legacy as a career soldier with liberal views but harsh military dealings. This photograph captures the image of the 3rd Earl of Albemarle, a man who defied easy categorization, and offers a glimpse into the complexities of British history during the 18th century.
