EDITORS COMMENTS
Georg Maior, also known as Georg Maier, was a prominent German Lutheran churchman and philologist of the 16th century. Born in 1502, Maior is best known for his contributions to the field of classical studies and his role in the Protestant Reformation. Maior received his education in Leipzig and Wittenberg, where he studied theology and classical languages. He became a professor of Greek at the University of Wittenberg in 1533, and later served as the rector of the university from 1542 to 1544. During the Protestant Reformation, Maior played a significant role in the translation and interpretation of the Bible into German. He collaborated with Martin Luther on the translation of the New Testament, and later worked on the Old Testament with other scholars. Maior's expertise in Greek and Hebrew enabled him to make important contributions to the understanding of the original texts. In addition to his work on the Bible, Maior was also a prolific writer and scholar. He authored numerous works on classical literature, philosophy, and theology. One of his most famous works, "Historiae Augustae," is a collection of biographies of Roman emperors from Augustus to Elagabalus. Maior's influence extended beyond academia, as he also served as a pastor and advisor to various princes and rulers. He was a trusted advisor to Duke Maurice of Saxony and played a role in the religious and political affairs of the duchy. Maior died in 1574, leaving behind a significant legacy in the fields of theology, philology, and classical studies. His work on the Bible and his contributions to the Protestant Reformation continue to be studied and appreciated by scholars today.
