The General Strike - hitching a lift

The Private Motorist does his bit to help people reach their work: An owner-driver at Southfields taking girls aboard. Girls hitching a ride to work during the General Strike. The cars windscreen carries a notice that says, If you want a lift, please signal. In support of a strike by coal miners over the issue of threatened wage cuts, the Trades Union Congress called a General Strike in early May 1926. The strike only involved certain key industrial sectors (docks, electricity, gas, railways) but, in the face of well-organised government emergency measures and lack of real public support, it collapsed after nine days. Date: May 1926

Aboard Commuting Driver Helping Hitching Londoners Motorist Private Reach Ride Strike Taking 1926 Owner Southfields

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment during the General Strike of 1926 in London, as a private motorist extends a helping hand to stranded women attempting to reach their workplaces. The strike, called by the Trades Union Congress in support of coal miners facing threatened wage cuts, primarily affected key industrial sectors such as docks, electricity, gas, and railways. With public transportation disrupted, many commuters were left to find alternative means of travel. In this image, an owner-driver at Southfields offers rides to girls hitchhiking, as indicated by the notice on his car's windshield, "If you want a lift, please signal." The General Strike, which lasted for nine days, ultimately failed to achieve its objectives due to the effective implementation of government emergency measures and a lack of widespread public support. This photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into the daily struggles and resourcefulness of Londoners during this pivotal moment in British history.
