Appointment Chief Haig Kcie Marshal December Douglas

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the momentous occasion when General Sir Douglas Haig was appointed as the new Commander-in-Chief of the British Army in December 1915. Haig, who was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1861, had already distinguished himself in military circles, having served in the Second Boer War and holding various senior positions within the British military establishment. Haig's appointment came at a critical juncture in the First World War, with the Allied forces facing significant challenges on the Western Front. The appointment was met with both hope and trepidation, as Haig was known for his aggressive military tactics and his belief in the infantry's ability to break through the enemy lines through sheer force. In the photograph, Haig is shown in full military regalia, wearing the insignia of his numerous honors, including the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB), the Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India (KCIE), and the Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO). Haig would go on to hold the position of Commander-in-Chief until the end of the war, and would later be elevated to the peerage as Earl Haig in 1917. The appointment of General Sir Douglas Haig as Commander-in-Chief of the British Army marked a pivotal moment in the First World War, and this photograph serves as a powerful reminder of the weight of responsibility that rested on his shoulders during this critical period in history.
