EDITORS COMMENTS
Gen. Robert E. Lee: A Symbol of the Antebellum South and the Lost Cause This evocative full-length portrait captures Gen. Robert E. Lee (1807-1870) in the twilight of his military career. The image, taken around 1867, shows Lee standing in a camp setting, facing left, dressed in his uniform. The general's posture is ramrod straight, and his gaze is introspective, as if lost in thought. Lee's military career spanned over thirty years, during which he rose to prominence as a brilliant tactician and strategic thinker. He served with distinction in the Mexican-American War, and when the Civil War broke out in 1861, he was offered command of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Under his leadership, the Confederate forces achieved many notable victories, including the Seven Days Battles and the Second Battle of Manassas. However, Lee's military prowess was not enough to prevent the eventual defeat of the Confederacy. In April 1865, with Richmond, the Confederate capital, under siege, Lee surrendered to Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House. The surrender marked the end of the Civil War and the beginning of a new era in American history. After the war, Lee returned to his native Virginia and lived a quiet life as a private citizen. He was revered by many in the South as a hero and a symbol of the Lost Cause, the belief that the Confederacy had fought a noble and just cause. This portrait, taken several years after the war, captures the essence of Lee as a military leader, a symbol of the Old South, and a man who embodied the values of honor, duty, and sacrifice.
