EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant postcard image captures the Fulham Workhouse on Fulham Palace Road, London, during the wartime period of World War I. The workhouse, a symbol of the Poor Law Union system, had long been a place of last resort for those in need, providing shelter and relief for the destitute. However, with the outbreak of war in 1914, the building took on a new role as the Fulham Military Hospital. During this time, the workhouse was transformed into a medical facility to care for wounded soldiers returning from the front lines. The red cross emblem displayed prominently on the building is a testament to its new purpose. Soldiers, many of whom were far from home and family, received medical attention and care in this once-unforgiving institution. The image, estimated to date from circa 1916, shows the workhouse's grand facade, now adorned with flags and banners, standing proudly against the London skyline. The First World War marked a significant shift in the perception of workhouses and their role in society. No longer synonymous with punishment and hardship, they became symbols of care and compassion, providing essential services to those in need, both at home and on the battlefield. This poignant postcard image serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of crisis and the enduring human spirit.
