French soldier fights off German attack, Craonne
An incident on the Western Front north of Craonne depicted by Paul Thiriat on the Front cover of The Graphic. A few French soldiers were working in a boyau or communication trench when they were suddenly attacked by about 120 Germans. Soon all were killed or wounded but one who fought back with revolver and grenades so that the Germans, trapped in a line in the trench were unable to get the better of him. When reinforcements arrived, the German soldiers were eventually caught, according to The Graphic, like mice in a trap. Date: 1917

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image, taken from the front cover of The Graphic magazine in 1917, captures the raw and unyielding bravery of a lone French soldier as he fights off an overwhelming German attack during the First World War, near the town of Craonne on the Western Front. In the trench depicted, a small group of French soldiers were working when they were suddenly ambushed by approximately 120 enemy soldiers. Trapped and vastly outnumbered, all but one were either killed or wounded. But the remaining soldier, determined to protect his comrades and hold the line, fought back with every weapon at his disposal – a revolver and grenades. The German soldiers, now pinned down in the trench, were unable to advance and were eventually caught in a deadly trap when reinforcements arrived. The heroic scene, expertly captured by French artist Paul Thiriat, serves as a poignant reminder of the unwavering courage and resilience displayed by soldiers on both sides during the Great War. The image, titled 'A Fight in a Boyau,' was published in The Graphic magazine in 1917 and remains a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of those who fought on the Western Front.
