EDITORS COMMENTS
Françoise Marie de Bourbon, Duchesse d'Orléans (1677-1749), also known as Mademoiselle de Blois, was a natural daughter of King Louis XIV of France and his mistress, Françoise-Athénaïs de Montespan. Born in 1677, she grew up in the Palace of Saint-Cloud and was educated in the arts, music, and literature. In 1692, she married Philippe II, Duc d'Orléans, the brother of King Louis XIV, who was then Regent of France during the king's absence at war. This striking portrait of Françoise Marie, painted around 1695, captures her youthful beauty and elegance. Her elaborate hairstyle, adorned with pearls and diamonds, reflects the opulence of the French Court during the late Baroque period. The rich fabric of her gown, with its intricate gold embroidery, adds to her regal appearance. As Duchesse d'Orléans, Françoise Marie played an important role in French court life, hosting lavish entertainments and patronizing the arts. She was known for her intelligence, wit, and charm, and was a favorite of the king and the French people. In 1715, after the death of Philippe II, Françoise Marie became Regent of France during the minority of her grandson, Louis XV. She ruled with wisdom and diplomacy, maintaining peace and stability in the kingdom during a time of political instability. Her reign as regent is remembered as a period of prosperity and cultural achievement in French history. This photographic print is a reproduction of the original portrait of Françoise Marie de Bourbon, Duchesse d'Orléans, which can be found in the collections of the Musée National du Château de Versailles. It is a testament to the beauty, grace, and strength of a remarkable woman who played a significant role in the history of France.
