EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Francois Pilatre de Rozier, a pioneering French aeronaut who made history as one of the first human beings to fly in a hot air balloon. Born in Metz on March 30, 1756, Pilatre de Rozier's fascination with flight began early in life. He became an apprentice to the famous Montgolfier brothers, inventors of the hot air balloon, and quickly distinguished himself as an accomplished aeronaut. On June 4, 1783, Pilatre de Rozier made his first ascent in a hot air balloon, accompanied by Marquis d'Arlandes. Their successful flight lasted for over two hours, covering a distance of approximately 46 kilometers and reaching an altitude of around 1,700 meters. This groundbreaking achievement marked the beginning of the era of human flight. Tragically, Pilatre de Rozier's life was cut short during his next flight attempt on June 15, 1785, near Boulogne-sur-Mer. During this flight, he was accompanied by the Marquis d'Arlans and a dog named Hector. However, due to a miscalculation of the wind direction, the balloon landed in the English Channel, and all three occupants drowned. This oval head-and-shoulders portrait, dating from between 1790 and 1850, preserves the memory of Francois Pilatre de Rozier, the brave and visionary pioneer of human flight. His legacy continues to inspire generations of aeronauts and dreamers alike.
