Born in 1506 in the Basque region of Spain, Xavier joined the Society of Jesus in 1534 and was sent to India as part of the Jesuit mission to spread Christianity. Upon arrival in 1542, Xavier encountered significant resistance from the local population, who were not only resistant to the new faith but also protective of their own traditions and way of life.
