EDITORS COMMENTS
"Frances Howard, Duchess of Richmond (1578-1639), is depicted in this exquisite portrait painting. Daughter of Thomas Howard of Bindon, Frances was a figure of intrigue and scandal in the Tudor and early Stuart courts of England. Born in 1578, Frances was the third wife of Ludovick Stuart, Duke of Richmond and Lennox. However, her first marriage was to Edward, Earl of Hertford, which ended in tragedy when her husband died under mysterious circumstances in the Tower of London in 1593. Frances was later implicated in his death and was imprisoned in the Tower for several years. Despite her past, Frances' beauty and charm were undeniable. In this portrait, she is shown wearing an elaborate gown adorned with pearls and lace, a sign of her wealth and status. Her dark hair is styled in intricate curls, and her expressive eyes gaze out at the viewer with a hint of sadness. Frances' second marriage to Ludovick Stuart took place in 1600, and they had several children together. The marriage was marked by political intrigue and power struggles, as Ludovick was a claimant to the English throne. Frances' involvement in these power struggles led to her imprisonment once again, this time in the Tower of London from 1623 to 1626. Despite her turbulent past, Frances remained a fascinating figure in English history. Her beauty, intelligence, and resilience in the face of adversity continue to captivate historians and scholars today. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a complex and intriguing woman who lived during a time of great political and social upheaval in England."
