EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting engraving captures the youthful beauty and poise of Frances Folsom Cleveland Preston (1864-1947), the extraordinary woman who became the youngest First Lady of the United States at the age of 21. Daughter of Oscar Folsom, a local judge, and Anna Neal Folsom, Frances was born and raised in Fayetteville, New York. In 1885, she met President Grover Cleveland (1837-1908) while she was still a student at Wells College. Cleveland, who was then a widower, was immediately captivated by the intelligent and charming young woman. They were married in the White House on June 2, 1886, making Frances the first First Lady to marry a president while in office. Frances Cleveland served as First Lady for Cleveland's second term from 1893 to 1897. During her time in the White House, she was known for her grace, style, and commitment to education. She also advocated for women's suffrage and supported various charitable causes. After Cleveland's presidency, the couple returned to their home in Princeton, New Jersey, where they raised their daughter, Esther. In 1908, Cleveland passed away, and Frances married Thomas J. Preston, a former governor of New York, in 1913. Frances Cleveland Preston passed away in 1947, leaving behind a legacy as a beloved First Lady and an influential figure in American history. This beautifully colored engraving, produced in the late 19th or early 20th century, captures the essence of Frances Folsom Cleveland Preston's captivating presence and her historic role as the youngest First Lady of the United States.
