Finns vs. Russian Tanks: A Daring Display of Anti-Tank Tactics in the Bitter Cold of the Second World War This evocative photograph, taken by renowned war correspondent and photographer G.H. Davis for the Illustrated London News in 1940, captures the intense and desperate battle between Finnish forces and Russian tanks during the Winter War. The image shows Finnish bombers, hidden in camouflaged pits beneath the snow, preparing to launch a daring attack against the advancing Soviet armored vehicles. The Finns, outnumbered and outgunned, employed ingenious tactics to counter the Russian tank threat. By hiding in pits beneath the snow, they were able to approach the tanks undetected and throw incendiary bombs onto the engine vents. This method, while risky, proved effective in destroying the tanks and disrupting the Russian advance. The photograph depicts several types of Russian tanks, including the T-26 and the KV-1, which were formidable weapons of the time. The Finns, however, were not without their own strengths. Their knowledge of the terrain and the harsh winter conditions gave them a significant advantage, allowing them to use the snow to their advantage in both concealment and mobility. The Winter War, which lasted from November 1939 to March 1940, was a pivotal moment in the Second World War, particularly for Finland. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, the Finnish forces put up a valiant resistance against the much larger Soviet army. This photograph is a testament to their determination, resourcefulness, and the daring tactics they employed to defend their homeland.
