EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the heroic defense of the Monteleón Gate during the Second of May in Madrid, an episode of the Peninsular War (1808-1814) that marked Spanish history with its bravery and sacrifice. The image, titled "Defense of the Monteleón," is a copy by A. Alvarez from an original painting by Manuel Castellano, housed in Madrid's Museo de Historia. During the Peninsular War, the Spanish people rose up against the French occupation led by Napoleon Bonaparte. On May 2, 1808, the French army, under the command of Marshal Moor, attempted to enter Madrid through the Monteleón Gate. The Spanish defenders, led by Lieutenant Colonel Luis Daoiz and Captain Pedro Velarde, held off the enemy forces for hours, buying valuable time for the city's inhabitants to escape. The print depicts the final moments of the battle, with Daoiz and Velarde standing atop the gate, swords in hand, as they face the relentless French assault. The determination and courage of these two heroes is palpable, as they fight to protect their city and their people. Tragically, both Daoiz and Velarde were killed during the battle, but their sacrifice inspired the Spanish resistance and galvanized the nation's resolve. The print, with its intricate details and rich colors, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the tumultuous days of the Peninsular War and the indomitable spirit of the Spanish people in the face of adversity.
