EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Fifth Earl of Portsmouth, Isaac Newton Fellowes-Walpole (1825-1891) This evocative portrait captures the distinguished countenance of the Fifth Earl of Portsmouth, Isaac Newton Fellowes-Walpole, in the mid-19th century. Born on July 11, 1825, Fellowes-Walpole was the eldest son of the Fourth Earl of Portsmouth and Lady Charlotte Susan Elizabeth Somerset. He succeeded to the earldom in 1845 upon the death of his father. The Earl of Portsmouth was a prominent figure in British society during the Victorian era. He was known for his extensive landholdings, which included large estates in Hampshire, Dorset, and Wiltshire. The Portsmouth family had a long and illustrious history, tracing their lineage back to the Tudor period. Isaac Newton Fellowes-Walpole was also an accomplished soldier, serving in the British Army during the Crimean War. He rose to the rank of Major and was awarded the Crimean Medal with clasps for the Alma, Balaclava, and Inkerman battles. Despite his military background, the Earl of Portsmouth is perhaps best remembered for his philanthropic efforts. He was a generous benefactor to various charitable causes, including the Royal Hospital for Incurables in Chelsea and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The Earl's personal life was marked by tragedy. He was married twice, first to Lady Harriet Elizabeth Somerset, with whom he had three children. Sadly, Lady Portsmouth passed away in 1858. The Earl then married Lady Mary Elizabeth Somerset, with whom he had five children. Lady Portsmouth also died young, in 1872. Isaac Newton Fellowes-Walpole died on March 23, 1891, at the age of 65. He is buried in the family vault at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. This striking portrait, taken in the mid-19th century, offers a glimpse into the life of a nobleman and philanthropist who left a lasting impact on British society.
