EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense gaze and unyielding determination of Field-Marshal Earl Roberts, one of the most accomplished military leaders of the Victorian era. Born in Ireland in 1832, Roberts rose through the ranks of the British Army to become a key figure in the African wars, particularly in the Second Boer War (1899-1902). Here, he is depicted during the final stages of that conflict, which saw the British ultimately emerge victorious. Roberts' strategic prowess and unwavering commitment to his troops earned him the moniker "Soldier's General." By the outbreak of World War I, Roberts had been appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Forces from Overseas. Tragically, he contracted pneumonia while visiting Indian troops fighting at the front and passed away on November 14, 1914, in St Omer, France. Roberts' military career spanned over five decades, during which he led his men in numerous campaigns and battles. His leadership and tactical acumen were instrumental in shaping the British military landscape, making him a revered figure in the annals of military history. This portrait stands as a testament to his indomitable spirit and enduring legacy as a great military commander.
