EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the noble and regal presence of Fernando Van Spanien (1585-1641), the illustrious son of King Felipe III of Spain. Born in Madrid, Fernando was appointed as the Governor-General of the Spanish Netherlands in 1621, a position he held until his death. His tenure was marked by his successful defense against the ongoing Dutch Revolt, which earned him the nickname "El Invencible" or "The Invincible." Fernando's impressive military career was not his only claim to fame. In 1619, he was created a cardinal by his father, making him one of the youngest cardinals in history at the age of just 34. The portrait showcases his ecclesiastical robes, signifying his dual roles as a military leader and a high-ranking member of the Catholic Church. The intricately detailed painting, believed to be by the Flemish artist Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641), showcases Fernando's striking features, with his piercing gaze and well-groomed beard. The artist's masterful use of light and shadow creates a sense of depth and dimension, further emphasizing Fernando's grandeur. The portrait is dated to 1609, a year before Fernando's appointment as Governor-General, suggesting that it may have been commissioned as a means of showcasing his potential to the Spanish court. The painting's rich colors and meticulous detailing serve as a testament to the artistic prowess of the time, providing a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Spanish court during the early 17th century.
