EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a group of brave and determined women at work in an Army Remount Depot in Berkshire during the First World War. The scene depicts the women, dressed in practical attire, tending to the horses with the watchful eye of artist Cecil Aldin, a renowned huntsman and Remount Officer for the area. Aldin was a pioneer in employing women in this role, recognizing their potential to make significant contributions to the war effort. With around 500 horses under his care at any given time, Aldin's team of approximately 100 women ensured that each horse was well-cared for, with tack and saddles in pristine condition. The women are shown smiling and working together, creating a sense of camaraderie and teamwork. Cecil Aldin's innovative approach to employing women in this traditionally male-dominated role was a great success, proving that women were more than capable of performing the essential tasks required to keep the horses in top condition for the army. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the important role women played during the First World War, and the significant impact they had on the military's horse-drawn transport operations.
