EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, the Sheffield United football team proudly displays the FA Cup after their victory in the 1915 final. The image captures the team's jubilation and sense of achievement, a moment of triumph amidst the backdrop of the ongoing First World War. The FA Cup final of 1915 was the last one to be held before competitive football was suspended in Britain due to the war. The match, played at Manchester, was held in a somber atmosphere, with the usual exuberant spirits exhibited at all Cup Finals noticeably absent. The image on the reverse of this card reads, "Played at Manchester in a murky gloom quite in keeping with the surroundings associated with the second year of the Great War." The players, dressed in their football kit and wearing caps, stand in a semi-circle, some with their arms around each other, creating a sense of camaraderie and unity. The team's victory in the FA Cup that year became known as the Khaki Cup Final due to the military uniforms worn by many of the players, reflecting the impact of the war on the game. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the historical significance of the 1915 FA Cup final and the unique circumstances under which it was played.
