The exploit of Michael O Leary, V. C. of the Irish Guards

Capturing the position practically by himself: the exploit of Michael O Leary, V.C. of the Irish Guards in 1915. A deed of valour which probably saved a whole British company: Sergeant O Leary, well ahead of his comrades, shoots the whole crew of a German machine gun, before advancing to attack their next barricade beyond, in the La Bassee brickfield at Cuinchy, France. Date: 1915

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the moment of bravery and heroism displayed by Sergeant Michael O'Leary, V.C. of the Irish Guards during the First World War in 1915. The image, taken at the La Bassee brickfield in Cuinchy, France, depicts Sergeant O'Leary in the act of single-handedly neutralizing a German machine gun nest, saving his British company from potential disaster. With his comrades trailing behind, Sergeant O'Leary boldly advanced towards the enemy position, taking out the entire crew of the machine gun with precise and quick shots. Having eliminated the threat, he continued his attack, moving on to the next barricade beyond. This act of valour, which likely saved an entire company, earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration for gallantry in the face of the enemy that could be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. The date of this remarkable event was April 16, 1915, during a time when the First World War raged on, and the courage and determination of soldiers like Sergeant O'Leary were essential to the British war effort. This photograph is a testament to the extraordinary exploits of the brave men who served during this period and the sacrifices they made for their country.
