EDITORS COMMENTS
1. This set of documents tells the story of bravery and recognition during the aftermath of the First World War. At the center is a copy of Army Orders from General Sir Henry Charles Monro Rawlinson, Commanding Officer of the 4th Army, dated 1st March 1919. The orders list the immediate rewards, including the Military Medal, granted to an impressive number of 40 recipients. The Military Medal is a decoration awarded to soldiers and officers of the British and Commonwealth armies for acts of gallantry and devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy. 2. Among the recipients was 23998 Private J. Herron of the Manchester Regiment, whose certificate of gallantry and devotion to duty is also included in this collection. The certificate, signed by General Sir H. S. Rawlinson, congratulates Private Herron on his exceptional bravery and dedication during the war. 3. The final document in the set is a request for acknowledgement of the receipt of the certificate by Records No. 1, No. 3 District in Preston, dated 28th May 1919. This document serves as evidence of the official recognition and appreciation for the valor shown by Private Herron and the other 39 soldiers. These documents, preserved in their original cardboard tube, offer a poignant reminder of the heroism and sacrifice displayed by the soldiers during the First World War and the importance of acknowledging their bravery.
