"This engraving captures the Twin Steam-Ship Castalia as it appeared in September 1874, just after its launch. The Castalia, a radical design for its time, was built with twin hulls for improved stability and sea-keeping. The innovative vessel was commissioned by the English Channel Steamship Company with the hope of revolutionizing maritime travel. However, the Castalia's design did not prove to be a success. In 1883, the Metropolitan Asylums Board purchased the ship for use as a floating hospital on the River Thames. The hospital ship served an important role in providing medical care to those in need, marking a new chapter in the Castalia's history.
