A Moment of Joy - A Victorian Christmas at Evelina Children's Hospital, 1882

EDITORS COMMENTS
Christmas comes but once a year, and for the children at Evelina Children's Hospital in Southwark, London, this special time of the year was made even more magical by the visit of their loved ones. Founded in 1869, the Evelina Hospital has been dedicated to the care and treatment of sick children for over a century. In this heartwarming scene from December 1882, a little girl, dressed in her best Victorian attire, is visited by her mother and younger sister. The warmth and love radiating from their faces bring a momentary respite from the harsh realities of illness and hospital life. The girl's sickbed is adorned with a tray and table, holding a chart and various medical instruments, reminding us of the ongoing care and attention she receives. Yet, the presence of her family and the festive decorations, including a jack-in-the-box and a doll in a bright red hat, bring a sense of normalcy and joy to the scene. The motto "Love is not just looking at each other, it's looking in the same direction," holds true as they share a moment of connection and love, despite the challenges they face. As we gaze upon this scene from the past, we are reminded of the importance of family, love, and the simple pleasures of childhood during the holiday season. The Evelina Children's Hospital, with its longstanding commitment to the health and wellbeing of children, continues to embody these values and bring joy to countless families every year.
