Underwater house under construction, Malta

An underwater, inflatable house under construction by students on a beach in Malta. The house was then anchored to the seabed, some 50 feet deep, in Paradise Bay, off the coast of Malta. It was equipped with lighting, telephone and immersion heaters with which the inhabitants could make hot drinks. It was constructed by teams of engineers and diving enthusiasts from Imperial College of Science and Technology and Enfield College of Technology. It was 9ft long and 6ft wide, constructed from rubberised material on a steel frame, and weighed around 500 lb. The team leader was David Baume who hoped it would be the first of a series of low cost underwater living spaces from which scientists could explore the seas. David and some other team members were able to spend a night 30 feet below the surface. The following day a severe storm caused the house to collapse. Date: 1969

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photograph from 1969, a team of ambitious students from Imperial College of Science and Technology and Enfield College of Technology work diligently to construct an underwater house off the coast of Malta. The innovative project, which took place in the idyllic Paradise Bay, saw the team build an inflatable abode using a rubberized material on a steel frame, weighing approximately 500 lb. and measuring 9ft long and 6ft wide. The underwater dwelling was anchored to the seabed, some 50 feet below the surface, and was equipped with essential amenities such as lighting, a telephone, and immersion heaters, allowing its inhabitants to make hot drinks. Team leader David Baume envisioned this as the first in a series of low-cost underwater living spaces for scientists to explore the depths of the sea. David and some team members bravely spent a night at a depth of 30 feet, experiencing the unique underwater environment firsthand. However, their underwater adventure was cut short when a severe storm struck, causing the house to collapse. Despite the setback, this groundbreaking project showcases the ingenuity and determination of these students during the 1960s, a decade marked by scientific and technological advancements. This photograph captures a moment in history when mankind dared to challenge the boundaries of living conditions and explore the underwater world, paving the way for future underwater research and innovation.
