London Coliseum - the Royal Box

Promotional postcard of the Royal Box of the London Coliseum. A Royal party visiting the Coliseum would enter by a private entrance into a richly furnished lounge, which upon a signal would move softly along on a track formed in the floor, through the salon and into a large foyer, which contained the entrance to the Royal Box. The lounge car remained in the position at the entrance to the box and served as an ante-room during the performance. The theatre was built by the theatrical architect Frank Matcham who intended it to be one of Londons largest and most luxurious " family" variety theatres. Construction started in 1903 and it opened on 24 December the following year as the London Coliseum Theatre of Varieties. It is located in St. Martins Lane, London. Date: circa 1905

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step into the regal world of London's grandest theatrical venue, the London Coliseum, as depicted in this exquisite promotional postcard from circa 1905. The London Coliseum, located in the heart of St. Martin's Lane, London, was designed by the renowned theatrical architect Frank Matcham with the intention of creating one of the city's largest and most luxurious "family" variety theatres. Upon entering the Coliseum, a royal party would be greeted with a private entrance leading to a richly furnished lounge. The lounge, adorned with opulent decor, would glide softly along a track in the floor, providing a private and comfortable journey through the salon and into a spacious foyer. Here, the entrance to the Royal Box awaited. The lounge car would remain in place at the entrance to the box, serving as an elegant ante-room during the performance. The theatre itself was a marvel of its time, boasting a magnificent gilded dome and ornate decorative details. Construction on the London Coliseum began in 1903, and it opened on Christmas Eve, 1904, as the London Coliseum Theatre of Varieties. This postcard offers a glimpse into the grandeur and sophistication of London's theatrical past, showcasing the Royal Box, a symbol of the Coliseum's commitment to providing its patrons with an unforgettable entertainment experience.
