Born Maria Anna Victoria Gonzalez de Silva y Fernandez de la Vega in 1826 in Granada, Spain, Eugenie rose to prominence in European high society through her beauty, intelligence, and charisma. Her marriage to Napoleon III in 1853, which took place when she was 23 years old and he was 40, was a strategic political union aimed at strengthening Napoleon's position as the ruler of France. The wedding itself was a grand affair, held at the Tuileries Palace in Paris and attended by European royalty and nobility. Eugenie's bridal dress, depicted in this photograph, was a magnificent creation of silk and lace, adorned with pearls and diamonds.
