The Enthusiastic Bootblack

EDITORS COMMENTS
by H.M. Bateman: A Humorous Take on Persistence and Patience, 1920 In this classic cartoon by H.M. Bateman, an innocent scenario unfolds as a man, weary from a long day, approaches a street corner bootblack, seeking a simple shoe polishing. The bootblack, an earnest and hardworking type, greets the man with a beaming smile and sets to work with great enthusiasm. However, as the man watches the clock, his patience begins to wane. Frustrated by the seemingly endless polishing, the man attempts to extract his foot from the stand, only to find the bootblack's tenacious grip holding him in place. Desperate to continue his journey, the man grabs hold of an omnibus, pulling it and the polishing man with him until the boot finally comes off, leaving the man lying in the street. Despite the man's efforts to escape, the bootblack remains undeterred, continuing his meticulous polishing as if nothing out of the ordinary has occurred. Bateman's humorous and amusing depiction of the situation highlights the contrast between the man's frustration and the bootblack's unwavering enthusiasm and dedication to his craft. This charming and lighthearted cartoon, created in 1920, showcases Bateman's unique ability to capture the absurdities of everyday life with wit and humor. The Enthusiastic Bootblack remains a beloved and enduring piece of visual humor, transporting us back to a simpler time and reminding us of the importance of persistence and patience.
