EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of an historic moment in polo history, as the British and American teams face off in the International Polo Trophy, also known as the Westchester Cup, in 1913. The American team, famously referred to as the 'Big Four,' consisted of J.M. Waterbury, Lawrence Waterbury, H.P. Whitney, and Mr. Devereux Milburn. The British team was led by the brilliant and powerful hitter, Captain Leslie St. Clair Cheape, alongside Captain Noel Edwards, Captain R.G. Ritson, and Captain Vivian Lockett. The tension between these two teams was palpable, with the Americans securing a narrow victory that year. However, the following year, the English team managed to secure a famous victory against the USA, just a few months before the outbreak of the First World War. Tragically, Captain Cheape, a respected and talented sportsman, was killed in action in Egypt in 1916, while commanding a squadron of the Worcestershire Yeomanry. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the elegance and skill of the players as they ride their ponies on horseback, dressed in their polo uniforms, and the intensity of the game as they play chukka after chukka. The image is a testament to the rich history of polo and the camaraderie between these two legendary teams.
