This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Robert von Spalart's Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages (1796), depicts Emperor Augustus in the Paludamentum, or war cloak, performing a sacrifice. Augustus, the first Roman Emperor, ruled from 27 BC to 14 AD and is known for his military conquests and extensive building projects, including the Pantheon and the Mausoleum of Augustus. The Paludamentum, a military cloak made of wool, was worn by Roman magistrates and military commanders during military campaigns. The cloak was fastened with a brooch and was often edged with a purple border, signifying the wearer's high rank. In this image, Augustus is shown standing on a raised platform, dressed in the Paludamentum, with a toga draped over his shoulders. He holds a sacrificial knife in his right hand, while a Roman priest, dressed in a simple tunic and wearing a cap, stands before him, holding a bowl to receive the blood from the sacrifice.
